The 2024 Met Gala saw a fusion of Hollywood glamour and fashion finesse as Uma Thurman and Bruna Marquezine graced the red carpet in exquisite custom looks by Tory Burch.
Uma Thurman wore a custom blue silk taffeta gown with hundreds of silk organza butterflies floating above her shoulders and back. Tory was inspired by an extinct butterfly, the American Xerces Blue; its magnificent iridescent wings reminded her of Uma’s eyes.
Each butterfly was individually hand-cut and hand-painted in Tory’s atelier, then applied to a delicate silk-wrapped wire.
The gown was constructed with a double-layer skirt, an exaggerated hip, and a hand-moulded corset bonded to hand-pleated, hand-pressed silk taffeta.
Meanwhile, Brazillian actress Bruna Marquezine wore a custom gown in pale blush pebbled silk organza with a hand-moulded corset and multi-layered hoop skirt on horsehair mesh. Tory mentioned that for this gown, she and Bruna focused on bringing a sense of “modernity to historical techniques.”
Layers of sheer organza highlight its intricate boning and construction, with an abundance of hand-cut silk flowers scattered at the hem. Dyed in shades of ivory, pale green, and rust, they look beautifully aged and not too precious, a nod to their ephemeral beauty.
